In 2039, a deadly pandemic has decimated humanity. In Germany, 513 survivors have barricaded themselves on the island of Helgoland. Because resources are scarce, each newborn must be offset by the death of another resident. If no volunteer steps forward, a ranking list—based on each person’s contributions and missteps—decides who will be killed. Island leader Beatrice (Martina Gedeck) enforces this harsh rule, while her son Hendrik (László Branko Breiding) serves in the local militia. The island’s only doctor, Marek (Alexander Fehling), is indispensable; together with his son Linus (Tobias Resch), he feverishly searches for a vaccine despite limited supplies. Meanwhile, a different struggle for survival rages on the mainland: civilization has collapsed, the virus spreads unchecked, and marauding gangs control the streets.
