The Net Germany

“Das Netz” is a unique style of serialized storytelling: several independently produced national series interlock and weave into a complex, cross-border master narrative about the corrupt power structures behind glamorous, international top-flight football. Each series stands on its own with a self-contained story, yet through shared plotlines and recurring characters they collectively offer deeper insight into the backstage world of global football in all its facets.
Defense lawyer Lea Brandstätter (Birgit Minichmayr) must watch as her boyfriend, acclaimed football scout David Winter (Itay Tiran), dies in an accident. Lea would like to mourn David in peace—if it hadn’t looked as though he were running from someone. Adding to the mystery is her strange encounter with hooligan Marcel Fork (Max von der Groeben). On that same day Marcel lost his best friend, stabbed by strangers in the stadium—only a few meters from David’s crash site. Is there a link? Lea and Marcel, joined by Lea’s mentor Christina (Eva Mattes), become an unlikely trio determined to learn who is really behind the deaths. Their search drags them ever deeper into a world of merciless greed and power, a trail that ultimately reaches the highest circles—the president of the World Football Association (WFA), Jean Leco (Raymond Thiry).
