A contemporary adaptation of Alfred Döblin’s 1929 novel of the same name: During an illegal crossing from Africa to Europe, the boat carrying Francis is caught in a storm. He vows that, if saved, he will become a good and decent man—and his prayer is answered. Now it is up to him to keep that promise. His journey takes him to Germany, where he earnestly tries to lead an honest life. But circumstances make it anything but easy. How can one stay good in a world that isn’t?
Francis soon meets the shady German drug dealer Reinhold, and the two men’s lives become entangled in a dark bond of fate. Time and again Reinhold tries to rope Francis into his schemes; each time Francis resists, only to give in and fall. One day Francis meets Mieze and falls head over heels in love, ushering in a brief period of happiness—yet Reinhold refuses to let Francis slip from his grasp.
