Maik Briegand (Mišel Matičević) once turned his back on his home in the heart of Lower Lusatia, where his police career had begun before reunification. But now the state-investigation officer returns to solve the murder of a young girl—and finds himself face-to-face again with former precinct colleagues, a failed marriage, his family, and his past. Detective Annalena Gottknecht (Odine Johne) is determined not to get dragged into Briegand’s old entanglements. Yet the more the determined investigator opens herself to the locals and the austere beauty of Lusatia, the greater her understanding of her partner becomes.
Like the giant buckets of the excavators that patiently strip away layer after layer to pry lignite from the earth, the two detectives dig into a case that ultimately carries them decades back into the past—to Maik Briegand’s youth and a traumatic experience…
